We Need Volunteers

Come help with the  volunteer effort this weekend! We will be gathering at the Rochester Town Offices at 10 am and hope to get people down to the River to clean up the banks on Saturday Oct 15th. Please wear sturdy boots or rubber boots and bring work gloves, lunch and water for yourself.  We will also be doing a big cleanup day on October 22nd in conjunction with the State of Vermont. The routine will be the same–town office at 10 am etc. Please join us for one of these days!

You can also connect directly with someone who needs help by visiting  our Need Some Help page and responding directly to the requests for help there.

If you or someone you know needs help, please either post on our Need Some Help page or contact Helene Massimino at 767-4245.

    Thank you Sue!

    To Jack Carlton
Yes the 73 bridge is open and you can get to Maple Hill. From 89 go thru Bethel and take Campbrook road over to Rochester. Safe traveling.

  • Jack Carlton

Can someone confirm that the Route 73 bridge is now permanently open as I am planning to get to my place by Maple Hill next week. I saw something from Vt Trans about taking the single lane bridge down October 26th to build a culvert. Our place is near Maple Hill so I need to get there from Rt 100.
Any info with clarity to this would be appreciated as soon as possible.

    Thank you!

  • I am still available to help with phone answering, mail answering, helping fill out forms, making sandwiches etc. — Anything not too hard on a bad back… please let me know.

    Cynthia,
Just realizing my phone number is posted incorrectly in earlier message. Please call 802-989-8196 or 802-443-5772 when you have ten minutes or so for us to talk.

We are developing a volunteer coordination program that I feel could be exciting and helpful to your efforts. I would love to share the concept with you and learn if Rochester could benefit from this offer.

    My best to you!
    Lisa

  • Lisa Ayers

Cynthia, I and a group of volunteers in Addison County have an idea on helping with the re-group effort to continue coordination efforts for volunteering and help keep the momentum going!

I would like to share this idea with you to see if it would be useful and learn how we can coordinate. Would you please call me at 802-898-8196 so we can discuss.

    I’d greatly appreciate it!

    Lisa

UPDATE: ACCESS ROUTE TO ROCHESTER AND RT 73 BRIDGE UPDATE- I’ve been trying to get up there to help with the clean up efforts however have not had access from Rt 89 Bethel, nor access to our home at Great Hawk.
Can someone please provide me with a Rt 107/100 and bridge update?
    Many thanks- Jack

Thank you to those that volunteered to get the Park House recycling. It’s much appreciated!

  • Hi there,

I am looking for someone with a truck who would be willing to move a large amount of recycling from the Park House to the Town Offices parking lot on recycling day, Saturday Oct 1st. Is there anyone out there who lives right in town who might be able to do this?

    Thanks! Cyndi

  • Oh Wendell!! You are too sweet. Thank you. I will keep in touch.

  • Wendell Johnson

    Oops, I meant Cyndi…

  • Wendell Johnson

    Cynthia,

When the “Island” has been rejoined to the town I will be happy to do whatever I can to repair your driveway. Let me know!

    Wendell

  • cyndi

Jeffrey and VIckie and everyone else who posted that they can come on Saturday. Please read the information above about where to show up and what to bring, etc. and we will be very happy to see you at the volunteer desk in front of the Town office on Saturday morning! Thanks for being willing to help. Cyndi

  • cyndi

    HI Kris,

You didn’t leave any contact info, so it is a bit hard to coordinate tomorrow with you via this message board. Please give me a call at 802-767-9100 and lets see if I can’t get you to somewhere you can help. I will be up at 7 in the morning on Friday, so any time after that is fine. Cyndi

  • cyndi

Keith, if you are in Stockbridge, go to the Ted Green Ford dealership and check in there with the Volunteer coordinator. They will send you out on an assignment–you are definitely needed in Stockbridge! Thanks. Cyndi

  • Kris

I have 6 people ready to volunteer on Friday 9/16. What time should we show up and where? Any chance someone could answer this question soon since I need to let these folks know what we are doing tomorrow?

  • Keith Klock

I will be in the Stockbridge area 9-16 and 9-17 and would like to help wherever I can. Have limited tools and am able bodied.

News and Road Info

The photo on the left is of Camp Brook Road, taken on September 6th, a few days after the flood. The image on the right is also of Camp Brook Road, taken on September 17th. Quite a remarkable job in road repair. (Notice the end of the driveway in both photos and the height of the bank above the truck in the left photo.

Tennis?
Wanna escape from the Flood Funk and play a little tennis? Great Hawk is opening its tennis courts to all area residents at any time for the rest of the season. The courts are located at the end of Austin Hill Road. Since Great Hawk is on The Island, transportation will have to be arranged.

No thru traffic over Brandon Gap. Wed. Oct. 26 RT 73 at Brandon Gap will be closed to all traffic. Replacing big culvert by Mylott’s camp. No thru traffic will be allowed for at least a week. I hope in that time they also will be paving all the washouts!

  • Nancy Brown

The RT 100 / RT 73 Bridge is OPEN!! You can drive from West Rochester to the Village. RT 73 over Brandon Gap is still under construction, permanent (we hope this time it will stay in place)culvert by camps still to be installed.

  • Monica

Any word on the bridge this morning?

  • Joanne

    Good morning everyone!!!
Rt 100 will not be closed today for bridge setting at Rt 73. The bridge will be set sometime on Saturday, if all goes well. Plan to bring your lawn chairs and a picnic lunch with your cameras if you want to watch this wonderful event! You should be aware that there will be delays on Rt 100 while the bridge is actually being set-pass the word! Thanks to everyone for all your patience during the past weeks!

  • Sandy Haas

Route 100 is really OPEN from Waterbury to Killington and beyond. Don’t be discouraged by road signs or state websites that may say otherwise. The state is being cautious because there is still paving work to complete. Valley towns are all open for business, and we welcome Vermonters and visitors from out of state. Our foliage is beautiful!

    **RECYCLING FOR THE “ISLANDERS

    ***RECYCLING FOR THE “ISLANDERS”***
There will be recycling at the footbridge area this Saturday 10/1/11 from 9am to 11am. As always, separate your glass and cardboard from all others. I will be there from 9-10ish to help haul recycles over the bridge. If you see this post, please pass the word!

  • Danny Dover

I just spoke to the road crew, and Camp Brook Road is now OPEN without restrictions. They’re still working on one section and it’s one lane only, so there might be a short delay, but otherwise it’s open to all traffic.

  • Linda Trombley

    Peter,
I took 100 from Rochester all the way to Killington yesterday. a few wait periods but a pretty good drive.

  • Peter Jensen

The VT Trans map for this morning shows Rte 100 from Stockbridge to Rte 4 open to emergency vehicles only – can anyone please confirm if this is open to traffic, partially open, or…? I’m planning on heading this way on Thursday, 9/22. Many thanks!

  • Bruce Flewelling

    Aaron,
RT 73 (from the west) isn’t bad. It’s a little rough from Brandon Gap to the Bingo corner, but ok if you take your time and stay out of the way of equipment. As for the Green Mountain National Forest, there is new info on their web page http://www.fs.fed.us/r9/gmfl.

  • Aaron larkin

So according to the vtrans website route 73 is open to local traffic now. Is this true? If so, how bad is the road? Just curious and still holding out hope that the national forest will be opened up there this fall. Thanks

    Aaron from Connecticut

  • Sandy Haas

    Hi Peter Jenson,

Route 4 reopened last week (see 9/16 post). There are still places where repairs are fragile, maybe even one lane, so allow extra time.

  • Peter Jensen

Any information about Rte 4 from Rutland to rte 100 and up to Rochester during the day? Will this route be open daytime hours later this week?

  • The deadline to report the loss of your Three Squares Vermont benefits (food stamp program) has been extended until Friday September 23. Please call 1-800-479-6151 or go to the local district Economics Office and report in person. Food lost due to power outages, flooding, etc. is reportable and will be replaced on your card.Replacement amounts cannot exceed the August amount and need to be in dollar amounts. Estimate your loss and report it ASAP.

  • Ethan Bowen

A suggestion. Check your cabin air filter to your car. I had replaced mine about six weeks ago. I checked it last week and it was chocked with dust. Just a suggestion to keep the lungs clearer during all this dusting dirt road driving. Oh and Roxbury Gab was a fairly quick and sane way to get to Randolph. You can only go South on 12A for a few miles and then you have to get on some back dirt roads (Braintree Mt. Rd, Thresher Rd. Etc) It tool about 1 hour 15.

  • Sandy Haas

Does anyone have a paper copy of Sunday’s Rutland Herald? If so, please email me. shaas@sover.net. Thanks

  • Sandy Haas

It’s official: Bethel Mtn Rd is open for the rest of this weekend (until Monday morning at 8:00 AM) This is from the Bethel Selectboard:

“Camp Brook Road will be open to thru traffic from 12:00 Noon, Saturday, 9/17/11, until Monday morning, 8:00AM, 9/19/11. At that time construction hours will resume from 8:00AM to 5:00PM daily until further notice.”

    Joe DeFreitas, Bethel Select Board

  • Danny Dover

It’s 9:30 am on Saturday. We live just above the detour for Camp Brook Road. I drove down there and Camp Brook Road is OPEN this morning. There is no “closed” sign or anyone directing traffic away from the road.

  • Anne Belanger

What’s the status of getting over Brandon Gap on the weekend???

  • Ginny Sedgwick

Any news if Bethel Mt/Camp Brook is open more hours now? I drove it this morning before 8am and looks like there is less construction now.

  • Sandy Haas

Route 4 is now open to Rutland. Please drive slowly through Pittsfield.

Yes, the Agency of Transportation has a website, but this page is more up to date on connections into and out of Rochester (e.g. hours when Bethel Mtn Rd is open)

  • kitty nardiello

can i travel from east middlebury vt on rt 125.. thru rochester vt and bethel vt to rot 89?

  • lori newcomer

is there any way to get to tunbridge during the daytime from rochester?
also, we drove from rochester to w lebanon today, via 100s through pittsfield, to 4e to 89 in quechee….mostly drivable, but very slow….it took us 2 hours. we are going again on wednesday the 28th. i’ll have 2 or 3 seats, if anyone wants to ride along, or i can pick stuff up, if anyone needs anything.

  • Ralph Ergas

Any news about the bridge ?

  • Pam Hinkle

Ladybelle, I took 125 yesterday and you’re right – it’s in great shape! There were just 1-2 spots where they were letting one lane through, but they were very minor spots. Thanks for the heads-up!

Also, FYI, A couple of people in Rutland told me yesterday that they hope to open Route 4 to traffic by the weekend – two-lane gravel – but passable.

  • Does anyone know a way to get to Tunbridge? I need to get to the Fair on Thurs (or so) to get some info for an article I am writing for a Burlington magazine. Thanks very much.

  • I found 125 to be completely fine– I hope you did, too, Pam.

  • This is a useful site for giving and receiving “stuff” that people may need. Like Craigslist.

I’m also wondering if/when there will be a temporary bridge connecting Rt 73 & 100, or if there are any plans in the works for a permanent replacement? I’m expecting to be back to work at The Mountain Times in Killington by Sep. 26 when our office will be reopening at its regular location, and am just wondering if I might not have to take “the long way home.” Thanks for any info.

  • Ralph Ergas

Does anyone have a factual update on the temporary bridge replacement at rte.73 & 100 ? I need to plan some appointments at Dartmouth Hitchcock . TIA , Ralph

  • Pam Hinkle

Wish I’d known about Camp Brook yesterday (I don’t turn on my computer in the morning – too busy)…I drove all the way to Waterbury and down Route 100 on the way home from East Randolph. Are they opening it at 1 every Sunday or was it just yesterday?

Went to Rutland today by Route 125 – that road is in great shape – only 2-3 areas with one lane. I was told by a couple of people in Rutland that they expect to open Route 4 by this weekend – still gravel but two lanes.

  • Sandy Haas

UPDATE for Bethel Mountain Road (Camp Brook Rd)

Today only, you can use the road after 1:00 PM

Here’s the message from the Bethel Selectboard:

“Camp Brook Road will be closed [Sunday] ONLY from 8:00AM to 1:00PM. On Monday the construction will resume the 8:00AM to 5:00PM schedule.”

Please remember that this is still just a goat path. Passenger cars can make it, but you must travel slowly and very carefully.

  • Sandy Haas

You can now reach I-89 from Rochester by going south through Pittsfield to Killington and east on Route 4 through Woodstock and Quechee to Exit 1. It’s slow, but passable by passenger car. Please respect all posted speed limits (15 mph in Pittsfield)

See yesterday’s post for other routes.

  • Pam Hinkle

Thanks, Ladybelle, for the update on 125. I may try it out on Monday.
